What the Supreme Court ruled is ludicrous

In June of 2022, the Supreme Court in the USA handed states free reign to make their own laws on abortions. Something so big should not be down to state governments.

Abortion is a huge topic of debate and is very relevant this year because of the new laws that state governments have been making. Since May 2nd, thousands of people in the USA - and in the UK, though no new laws were created - took to the streets to rally against the decision. The protests are still happening at the time this blog was written, and many people are extremely angry. This is because some states have abolished abortion outright, or made new restrictions. Abortion should be a basic right, in my mind. What these people are doing is forcing women to have babies. And don't say 'well they should be more careful then' because it's not always that simple. If a woman is raped, gets pregnant, and lives in a state where abortion is illegal, then she is forced to have that baby. Every time she looks at her child, she will be reminded of what happened. And the child will one day have to know that their father is a rapist. It's ludicrous.

What if the parents can't afford the baby, or the baby would be growing up in an environment completely unsuitable? Or what if the parents are unsuitable themselves? All these scenarios just prove that it's ridiculous to give a decision as big as this to state rulers.

One of the regulations in certain states is that you can't have an abortion in the third trimester (the last 3 months of pregnancy). When you first look at this rule you think, fair enough, by this point the baby is almost fully developed, and it would be cruel to kill it. And it would be, until you look at the statistics. Less than 1% of abortions happen during the third trimester, and that's because the vast, vast majority of them are due to new health concerns - in some cases, if the birth happened then the woman could die - which is why it's not a well-thought-out rule. Nobody's going to get accidentally pregnant, sit around for six months and then, upon entering the third trimester, think 'hmm, I should probably get the abortion now'. People aren't stupid; they're not going to have an abortion in the third trimester unless something concerning is newly uncovered.

All of what I said is my opinion - I just wanted to write about it because many people are outraged.

Read this with great interest, Maddy. Well done. Failure and success may be quite subjective, don't forget, and sometimes we are our own harshest critics. Learning to recognise our own limits takes a lifetime as well!

Do you think it might help to pray for guidance, when faced with choices or difficult decisions? I guess this depends on your views on God - does he/she exist? Can he/she be trusted? Is he/she remotely interested in me (you) and our life journey? What if I (you) don't agree with the guidance? How do I (you) recognise the guidance in the first place?

Above all, avoid becoming as disenchanted as Macbeth. I love the play, some wonderful speeches. Watched a very old Orson Welles production last night, and the "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow ..." speech is one of my favourite!

Carry on blogging.

Lots of love,

Kate x
